I’m definitely not alone when I say that my emotions can get the better of me sometimes. But there was a time when they really got the better of me. My story is like so many other women, but to me, it was unique. At that time I thought I was the only woman in the universe feeling the way I felt. I now know otherwise, but when you’re handed a formal diagnosis of severe post-natal depression with two little boys at home, a shift happens inside. A monumental shift. How can my mind put up such a great internal struggle against what other mothers claim to be the most magical time of their lives? I had no concept of magic with my babies, just endless sleep deprived days and screaming (mostly from the babies, but sometimes from me - warts and all out today!). To say I needed to make changes was an understatement.
That was six years ago. Six years of forging my own path (with the help of friends, family and medical professionals) to recovery from years of accepting the hold of depression and anxiety. I won’t say it’s been all roses and rainbows, there’s been ups and downs etc. but I’ve built myself into a much stronger and confident person compared to where I was when I started this journey and I have collected a toolbox of techniques (and of course tools) that have helped me understand my emotional health. One of the most influential tools in that box are my essential oils.
But firstly, what is an essential oil?
In other words, they are the most powerful chemical components of the plant distilled down into their most potent form. They have been used for centuries for their physical support, cleaning and perfume properties, but they are also powerful emotional tools as well.
As outlined in one of my favourite books by Enlighten Healing: Emotions and Essential Oils; essential oils can help support emotional well-being in five stages:
I won’t go through all the above in this one article (there is just so much to cover in those 5 points!), but I will touch on the first two, because they were incredibly important in my healing journey.
The book suggests that we need to heal our physical body before we can heal our heart and work on emotions. We’re not talking about a complete lifestyle overhaul straight away, just being more aware of how you treat your body. What food did you eat today? How much water did you drink? Did you fit in a walk or a gym session (good on you!)? Did you get enough sleep (this is a BIG one)? When I realised that I had to start making positive changes in my life one of the first things I did was download an audio book app on my phone, hit up the “self-help” section, and I (*gulp*) downloaded my first “self-help” book - Mastering Your Mean Girl by Melissa Ambrosini. I was slightly mortified with myself, but man I wish I had done it sooner! That book was the catalyst for a lot of the changes I made from then on out. I spent that whole summer walking the roads through cane fields in country Northern New South Wales (Australia) with a collection of new life coaches in my ear. My walks became my own sacred time just for me. After walking most days for a few months, I joined a local gym and stepped up my physical workout routine and started to make better decisions about what I put on and in my body.
And this is about the time when essential oils entered my life.
Bring on healing stage number 2: healing the heart with essential oils!
The Emotions and Essential Oils book outlines how essential oils assist in supporting emotional well-being:
“...they provide us with the energy needed to penetrate the heart and enter the emotional realm. Essential oils raise the vibration of the physical body. As the body lives in higher vibrations, lower energies (such as suppressed emotions) become unbearable. These feelings want to release. Stagnant anger, sadness, grief, judgment and low self-worth cannot exist in the environment of balance and peace which essential oils help to create.
Emotional healing occurs as old feelings surface and release. Sometimes this experience is confused with regression. People may perceive they are going backwards or that the essential oils are not working. We are so used to symptomatic healing that we have been conditioned to view healing as the immediate cessation of all physically and emotional pain. In reality, the oils are working.”
It’s important here to understand that essential oils allow us to experience the process of managing our emotional well-being. The book goes on to state that we must release our negative emotions to make way for the positive. Throwing out the old to make room for the new. If we resist this step of acknowledging our negative emotions during the cleansing stage, then it can make the whole process drawn out and painful. Let go and trust.
During this process, remember that essential oils are a tool to be used to assist in our emotional care. They do not do the work for you. They are extremely important because they allow you to turn inward and focus on healing.
How I use essential oils for balancing emotional health:
There are numerous ways you can incorporate essential oils into your emotional well-being toolbox. I for example prefer to use a cold-water diffuser around the house to balance my mood (or the children’s!), or boost motivation in the office. I also love wearing my tigers-eye and turquoise stone lava bead aromatherapy bracelets during the day with my favourite supportive oils. Occasionally when I’m feeling super spiritual, I’ll run my diffuser with oils such as Frankincense during meditation, or add a peaceful blend to the background of a living room yoga session. But mostly I just run straight for my favourite oils and smell them straight from the bottle when I’m feeling in desperate need of support! Take for example when the kids drop both IPads in one afternoon smashing both screens...
Some of my cleansing oils include:

“Lemongrass is a powerful cleanser of energy. It dispels feelings of despondency, despair and lethargy. Lemongrass assists individuals in entering a healing mode or cleansing state. Bergamot has a cleansing effect on stagnant feelings and limiting belief systems...Bergamot’s powerful cleansing properties generate movement in the energy system, which in turn brings hope.
Bergamot teaches individuals to let go of self-judgment by learning to love themselves unconditionally.
Frankincense: The Oil of Truth
“Frankincense reveals deceptions and false truths. It invites individuals to let go of lower vibrations, lies, deceptions and negativity. This oil helps create new perspectives based on light and truth. Frankincense recalls to memory spiritual understanding, gifts, wisdom and knowledge that the soul brought into the world. It is a powerful cleanser of spiritual darkness.”
Three very powerful oils that have definitely helped me on my healing journey that I cannot recommend enough.
